  EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW
WELL ALMOST – YOU’LL STILL HAVE TO LEARN TO FIX THEM. HOWEVER, THE LONG HERALDED EV REVOLUTION IS FINALLY HERE. STEPHEN CORBY TAKES A LOOK AT WHERE THINGS ARE AT AS WE SPEED TOWARD AN ELECTRIC FUTURE...

HETHER YOU BELIEVE ELEC-
tric vehicles to be an eco-friend- ly transport saviour or an unho- ly blight on the automotive industry, one simple fact remains: they’re here, and, like a battery-powered
tsunami, a whole lot more are coming. Several car manufacturers have either pledged to go all-electric or offer an EV alternative for every model by a date in the near future, which means the colli- sion repair industry needs to prepare it- self for the coming EV wave, if it hasn’t
done so already.
Lest you think that fixing EVs might
be a problem for “future you”, while you might have only seen the odd one, soon it will be one a week with that number sure to skyrocket over time. That means
EVs will soon become a huge part of your business, and the time get up to speed on them is right now. Those who have already undergone training will have a market advantage.
Here’s your handy guide to everything EV-related so that you’re across the cur- rent state of affairs and well prepared for what’s just over the (electric) horizon.
TYPES OF ELECTRIC VEHICLES
Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV, or EV)
Powered solely by a (typically lithium- ion) battery that charges by being plugged into an external power source.
Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV)
Has both an internal-combustion engine (ICE) and electric motor powered by a
battery that plugs into an external power source to charge. Can drive in all-electric mode, a combo of ICE and electric motor or just the ICE if the battery is depleted.
Hybrid
Has both an ICE and a battery-powered electric motor, but the battery self- charges via regenerative braking.
EVS: THE GLOBAL STORY
A total of 6.6 million electrified cars (EVs and PHEVs) were sold around the world in 2021 — double the number of 2020 — with half of that consisting of sales in China and 2.3 million of them in European sales, the two regions com- bined representing a whopping 85 per cent of global EV sales in 2021.
