It’s not a huge surprise when you look at what’s happening at a government level: European governments put $17.8 billion into EV subsidies and tax waivers in 2021, and China almost matched that with $17.09 billion billion.
Around 630,000 EVs were sold in the US in 2021, double the amount sold in 2020.
Norway has the highest concentration of EV sales, thanks to generous govern- ment incentives and tax breaks, with 2021 new car sales being made up of 65 per cent EVs and 22 per cent PHEVs.
There were a considerable 16.5 million electric cars on the road worldwide in 2021 - three times more than the amount in 2018.
EVs in Australia
Due to a historic lack of government in- centives and tax breaks, the EV market in Australia has been sluggish to get going - only two per cent of new car sales in 2021 were electric - but the numbers are rising.
A total of 20,665 electric cars were sold here in 2021, which is triple the amount sold in 2020.
In the first half of 2022, 9680 electric vehicles have been sold, with 4653 of those being a Tesla Model 3, making it Australia’s most popular EV.
There are around 30 different EV mod- els available in Australia currently, which is a drop in the ocean, considering there are over 450 available worldwide.
The Labour Government seems keen to switch up the EV takeup pace with a number of new initiatives and support for a better charging infrastructure
