Building Automation
1,400 solar panels supply the Bendigo campus with half of
its energy needs.
Leap to new platform
RESEARCHERS FROM LA Trobe University's Centre for Data Analytics and Cognition are designing the La Trobe Energy Analytics Platform (LEAP) — a tool which will monitor and manage energy consumption across the university's 50 buildings.
It promises to make lighting, heating, and cooling adjustments in real time to reduce energy consumption.
Data will be collected to analyse energy consumption patterns allowing research to identify spikes and anomalies.
The research combines data analytics, algorithms, artificial intelligence, and machine learning to create the smart building 'platform' which will al- low the building to think for itself and reduce its energy consumption. The smart building research is part of La Trobe's plan to reach a zero emissions target by 2029. At the Melbourne campus more than 7,000 solar panels will be installed across 27 smart buildings.
Over 3,300 solar panels have been installed at regional campuses.
Get smart with Alerton
ALERTON AUSTRALIA HAS been tasked with providing the building au- tomation works to monitor and control the equipment on site at the new HVAC Centre of Excellence at Holmesglen TAFE in Melbourne.
The onsite equipment includes air handling units, VAV boxes, chillers, boilers, pumps, energy recovery ventilation unit, heat exchangers and chilled beams.
Apprentices now have the chance to work hands-on with Alerton and Optergy equipment to get a first-hand look about how the BMS ties smart buildings togeth- er. Students will learn how the system is controlled and monitored via the BMS front end. Through the Proton by Optergy, students and teachers have access to in- teractive and informative displays that will give illustration and information of the system that will greatly assist in tech- nical learning.
As technology in the HVAC industry has improved over the years, new workers to the HVAC industry need to be up to date with current technology.
