Impressive result for Aussie tradies
THE AUSTRALIAN SKIL- LAROOS finished 8th overall out of 66 countries at the 45th WorldSkills International Champion- ships in Russia.
Australia won a silver, three bronze medals and nine medallions of
excellence.
The impressive result represents years of prep-
aration and hard work.
Refrigeration and air conditioning apprentice Patrick Brennan claimed a Bronze medal after go- ing up against 28 competitors while Patrick Keating won Bronze in the plumbing and heating category.
Brennan was sponsored by Kirby and Refriger- ant Reclaim Australia while Keating was spon- sored by Reece.
WorldSkills Australia general manager, Bri- gitte Collins, said the Skillaroos demonstrated the strength of vocational education and train- ing in Australia.
BOC commits to renewable hydrogen
GAS SUPPLIER BOC has announced a $31 million pilot project to produce green hydrogen and build a hydrogen vehicle refuelling station.
The project includes the installation of a 220 KW electrolyser and 100 KW solar array at their Bulwer Island facility, north east of the Brisbane CBD.
The Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARE- NA) has contributed $950,000 toward the project.
With capacity to produce 2400kg of renewable
hydrogen per month, the system will sup- ply BOC’s existing customer base and also provide up to 50kg of renewable hy- drogen per day for the new Brisbane refu- elling station.
BOC South Pacific’s managing direc- tor John Evans said the project will take advantage of BOC’s existing infrastruc- ture and expertise to support the growth of hydrogen as a zero emission fuel.
“BOC is proud to be establishing a lo- cal supply of renewable hydrogen in Queensland that can be easily scalable and replicated across the country. We will also demonstrate our leading refuel-
ler technology that has been widely adopted across Europe and the US,” Evans said.
ARENA has thrown its weight behind the de- velopment of hydrogen as an alternative fuel source, funding 16 research and demonstra- tion projects to give the technology a foothold in Australia. The agency has commited $22.1 million to these projects and is supporting the National Hydrogen Strategy being led by Chief Scientist Alan Finkel.
ARENA CEO Darren Miller said BOC will demonstrate the production and use of re- newable hydrogen in refuelling, and capi- talise on existing gas production and sup- ply chains.
“Hydrogen is a huge opportunity for Austral- ia, both in our domestic economy and interna- tionally as an emission-free energy source,” Miller said.
According to a report prepared by ACIL Al- len, Australia’s hydrogen export industry could be worth $1.7 billion annually by 2030, and ac- count for 2800 jobs.
