Future proofing operations
CHILLED AND FROZEN meal manufacturer Jewel Fine Foods has installed an ammonia-based refrigeration system at its new factory in Sydney.
The company chose ammonia over synthetic refrigerants to reduce its energy costs and future proof its operations.
The system was commissioned last year and installed by Tri Tech Refrigeration, which spe- cialises in ammonia and CO2-based systems.
Jewel Fine Foods supplies chilled and frozen meals to some of Australia's largest retailers in- cluding Coles, Woolworths, Aldi, Costco and IGA among others.
GEA Australia supplied the ammonia com- pressor packages and GEA Witt provided liquid refrigerant pumps for this project.
For the factory's 'High Care and Low Care' cold storage rooms, air-conditioned rooms and critical process equipment, chilled propylene glycol is cir- culated, the cooling requirements of which are served by a GEA DuoPack compressor package. In addition, a GEA ‘M' series compressor package
provides the cooling capacity to supply chilled water for critical process equipment and for air conditioning in the factory's cooking area.
Danfoss variable speed drives are also used on all main compressors, condenser fans, chilled water pumps, glycol pumps, and under-ceiling air cooling units in order to make the system as energy efficient as possible.
Industries such as food and beverage process- ing and applications related to cold storage are increasingly looking to industrial refrigeration equipment to increase efficiency, according to a new report by Persistence Market Research.
The report said the market is growing at a brisk pace.
Driving the global industrial refrigeration equipment market is the growing use of natural refrigerants, and the need to increase energy ef- ficiency, the report said.

ucts that have a greater efficiency of chilling,” the research firm said. The report provides a nine year market assessment starting in 2017 through to 2026. At the end of 2017 the market was valued at nearly $US22,650 Mn at the end of the year 2017 and is slated to reach $US36,900 Mn at the end of the assessment period in 2026, which is a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 5.6% during the forecast period. ✺
