Shifting ground
WELCOME to our first bi-monthly issue. Last issue the ground was fast falling beneath our feet. As I write this there is news of venues re- opening and kids going back to school. Business analysts have started talking in three-word slogans – KPMG says food and drink businesses are either booming, declining or hibernating; Mintel defines it as reinvigorating, retooling, reintroducing; and Nielsen talks about rebounding, rebooting and
reinventing – so life’s back to normal, huh?
I don’t think any of us are that naïve, but what has become very
apparent is the trends we were seeing in the sector have all sped up. It will be fascinating to see where everything falls once COVID-19 is more behind than around us.
The pandemic prompted the Australasian Packaging Innovation & Design Awards (PIDA) to be held online this year. The food and beverage winners showcase
a stellar range of products and thinking outside
the box (see what I did there?). Read all about it on pages 6-9.
The virus also brought the expo and exhibition industry to a halt, with major events like foodpro and interpack postponed. So you don’t miss out, our Processing & Packaging Tech feature (page 22) is 14 pages of the latest equipment and products on the market.
Our Rising Star (page 10), Planet Protector
Packaging, won gold at the PIDAs for its lobster box
while its founder, Joanne Howarth was recently announced as a finalist in the global 2020 Cartier Women’s Initiative. Her motivation and commitment to sustainable packaging is inspiring.
This issue is jam-packed, short and sharp as we make room for the annual Industry Directory. It is a comprehensive listing of suppliers and manufacturers and begins on page 39.
Onward.
