Natural Refrigerants
because regardless of the economic climate, the world and the market is constantly chang- ing. In the air-conditioning industry the big- gest change today is the range of new flamma- ble refrigerants that are required to produce energy efficient equipment.
People aren’t born natural leaders – they are created over time. Recognising the need to up- date skills to meet the changing HVACR land- scape, there have been a couple of recent ex- amples of leadership in this industry. The first was the introduction of Green Scheme Accred- itation by the Australian Refrigeration Coun- cil. It ensures technicians are qualified to work with natural and low Global Warming Poten- tial (GWP) refrigerants.
Another example of leadership is the R32 training course being run by the Superior Training Centre. It is being rolled out by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Air Condition- ers Australia (MHIAA) who have taken the lead to ensure their dealers get the educa- tion they need to protect them physically and legally. It isn't easy for small air condi- tioning contractors to survive. The present dealer network is tough which is why its so important to set yourself apart from com- petitors and to constantly improve your of- ferings. Strive to add value to people’s lives by continually innovating when it
comes to your brand. You don’t need to make huge, monumental changes, but you do need to consistently be evaluating what’s working and what’s not. This is in addition to anticipat- ing gaps in the market and creating items that bridge those gaps.
The good news about an economic
downturn is it forces the innovative leaders amongst us to think and come up with new systems and products. This is the time when the disrupters breakthrough the noise and change the market for the better.
When presented with business opportuni- ties during a market correction, don’t try to convince yourself that there are a million rea- sons to wait until the economy rebounds. The

market will always have its up and downs, but if you’re able to anticipate these changes and offer something that provides value to the lives of others, then you’re bound to succeed.
Imagine how much money you would have made if you invested in these companies that were started in a reccession –Microsoft, Dis-
Safety system
THE UN ENVIRONMENT Program (UNEP) and ASHRAE have produced a new publication to update the market on the current list of avail- able refrigerants, their ASHRAE numbers and safety classifications.
ASHRAE’s Standard 34 establishes a simple means of referring to common refrigerants rath- er than by their chemical name, and adds a safe- ty classification based on the refrigerants toxici- ty and flammability.
For pure compounds, the numbers are based on chemical formula. For blends, numbers are assigned sequentially based on the completion of a satisfactory review of data provided by the re- frigerant’s producer.
Standard 34 assigns an identifying reference letter and number to each refrigerant to classify it according to the hazard involved in its use. The capital letter designates a toxicity class based on allowable exposure.
The numeral denotes flammability. For exam- ple, Standard 34 defines two safety classifica- tions for toxicity. Class A denotes refrigerants of lower toxicity, and class B denotes refrigerants of higher toxicity.
For flammability, there are three classifica- tions and one subclass. The three main flamma- bility classifications are class 1, for refrigerants that do not propagate a flame when tested as per the standard; class 2, for refrigerants of lower flammability; and class 3, for highly flammable refrigerants such as hydrocarbons. ASHRAE re- cently updated the safety classification to in- clude flammability subclass 2L. ✺
