MARG EDWARDS
Lone Surfer
EDITOR’S COMMENT
Marg Edwards’s image not only captures one of those beautiful moments where a figure is seemingly lost in the great outdoors, but
also a snapshot of what many of
us dream of when we want to get away from it all. Combine this with an amazingly moody sky and some lovely afternoon lighting, and this is
a real standout image. There’s just enough of the surfer in the middle of the frame to anchor the image and provide some context to the scene, which also helps elevate this photo beyond just being a nice shot of the ocean. This is the kind of isolation we would love to be part of.

JILL VELINOS

EDITOR’S COMMENT
Isolation isn’t just something that occurs when we’re on our own, and Jill Velinos has captured the feeling of tension that can come with it beautifully in this image of her two sons caught in a Melbourne lockdown.
“During the week we focus on education and work so that by the end of the week we can switch off and take it slow,” she explains. “This is a photograph of my two sons watching TV on
a Sunday morning. Despite the COVID-19 lockdown, Sunday mornings still have the same lazy feeling they always had before lockdown.”
We liked the subtle emotions and arching posture you’ve captured here which nicely mirrors the fall of the light. If we were to offer one critique it would be to choose a narrower aperture to have your second son’s face in focus, but this is still a lovely image.
