your poor attempt at explaining with “Uh I just can’t find the words for the music or experience.” All Pets Go to Heaven.
Additionally, Gadamer would say, “Language can also be a communication that doesn’t necessarily need spo-
ken words.” So, when you view language as having multiple vehicles of communication: our soundless display Until we meet again, Zoe Grace
of our mood, our interactions and exchange with others, animals, nature, our body language, and thus music is
language as well. So, the answer is no, because it can be explained just not as effective in the spoken word as it is
can be in the vast number of other mediums. There is power in the spoken word. Verbalizing trauma to a trained
psychotherapist for example, such as the work my brother is engaged in, can break down barriers and open the PAWS 2
doors to recovering from trauma.
ZGP: Peter, you have wowed us with your brilliant knowledge of music – the mysterious
power, the underlying healing powers it provides, and the vast reach music has in uniting
humanity. I have one last question. Can you tell me about your dog? REMEMBER
PS: I always grew up with a strong connection with my dogs. The strongest connection , however, was with
our dog Panther, whom we lost a few years ago. Black Panther was a black lab and we had to make the decision Pet Cremation
to end his suffering when he was sixteen. It was traumatic for me and my two boys. We do have a new-kid on
the block, Dandy, short for Dandy-Lion. Dandy is a brazen Rottweiler Lab mix. He doesn’t care about anything
except doing his own thing. Living in rural Ireland, Dandy has plenty of space to run, which generally includes
chasing cows. Unlike Panther, Dandy would return inside, see the family sitting and go elsewhere to lay down or
he goes upstairs where he can keep watch on the cows from the window. Panther would get as close to us as pos-
sible. While Dandy is brazen, you know all dogs find their way into your heart. I try to pretend I’m not that fond
of him, but you know I’m just as hooked as my kids.
Peter Shannon is not only brilliant but passionate about music and the power it has to help
those who suffer. Please follow The Jackson Symphony conductor for more information
about upcoming events, the healing power of music, and how you, too, can conduct more
than kindness in your life and your community.
