Another big achievement for the club was to win the championship in 1921 while
holding a record, which is still standing: “30 CONSECUTIVE CHAMPIONSHIP
GAMES WITHOUT DEFEAT”. For those of you who know the hardship of the
English league, this is a tremendous and almost unbelievable performance.
In order to commemorate this ‘piece of history’, a bright wall panel has been
fixed in the tunnel leading to the pitch.
The team of 1959-60 was not as successful in terms of unprecedented
achievement, but nonetheless managed to win the title. The progression was
exciting and probably the most exhilarating of the history of the competition so
far. THE CHAMPION WAS NAMED ON THE LAST GAME OF THE SEASON:
Wolverhampton was top with 54 points and a better goal average than Burnley,
who was on 53 points. Burnley was playing against Manchester City for their last
game, in front of a sell-out crowd, which was supporting its team with passion.
Burnley won 2-1 and was crowned champion of England for the second time.
Everything has never been plain sailing in the life of the club, which was
relegated twice to the second division. The same year that they reached the
final of the CUP in 1947; they lost the game against Charlton Athletic, eight
minutes from the end of the overtime.
However, throughout the seasons, Burnley has built the reputation for being a
steady team, a symbol of fair play and quality football.
