About the Koru
Koru (pronounced caw-roo) means Fern Sprout. For
Māori it is a symbol for the whānau, the family, which
is very important to the people of this culture.
As the fern emerges, it keeps its youngest and most
tender leaves safe within its curl. It represents the
preciousness of children, the sanctity of family, and the
spiral cycles of life.
A family provides the same protection and security
as the Koru to all those they love and wish to nurture.
The whānau, the family, means more than just blood
relatives to the people of Aotearoa. There are many
types of family groups. The marae provides a sacred
and protective gathering space for those meeting there
as an extended family, a whanau.
