Yes, We Are Adequate Enough!
The children in Sunday school were assigned to
memorize the 23rd Psalm. When it was Ricky’s turn,
he began to recite it as best as he could. Then proudly
he said, "The Lord is my Shepherd… and that's all I
need to know." That was enough of a message for
Ricky.
The Lord is my shepherd. What more DOES he
need to know?
As we think about the Lord as our Shepherd, we are
encouraged to remember that we can be adequate
enough to add to God’s world while we subtract pain
from the planet.
I write these paragraphs as a Chaplain of L’chaim BY RABBI GEOFFREY
Jewish Hospice, and I am grateful that Catholic BOTNICK
Hospice of Miami-Dade and Broward County has cre-
ated this program to meet the varied needs of Jewish
families enrolled in our hospice care.
Many of our patients have slipped from their early abilities and vibrancies to a
presence that no longer resembles their dynamic ability to converse or sometimes
remember family names. Our team affirms for them the message, they still are
adequate enough to receive God’s love. We are reminded daily that no matter
what obstacle is set before us we are adequate enough to bring God’s love through
our outreach and our understanding.
We are all adequate for so many kinds of assignments and tasks. We are taught
to see our patients as having been part of a very special story, regardless of their
condition. We also knowledge the new challenge this brings to their loved ones.
As a chaplain, we highlight how worthy we all are of patience, support and a
smile.
We are still deserving of God's love. Therefore we can proudly say, “The Lord
is my Shepherd, and that’s all we need to know.”
