Canary in the Coal Mine …
Like many of you, Carol, Gabby and I are hunkered down for the duration
with minimal contact with the outside world. I must admit it took us awhile to
get it through our heads that we were in the risky group of 60+, but after a
frank conversation with each other we realized neither one of us is still young
enough to take unnecessary risks. As many of you know, we’ve worked together
on South Florida Hospital News & Healthcare Report, and now Cannabis News
Florida, for more than 16 years in a home office situation. Our family room is basically Ground Zero with our desks
about 9 feet apart. (So, in effect, we’ve been practicing social distancing the whole time!)
Of course, someone still has to leave the house for groceries, post office, take-out, etc. And in our house with my
asthma, by unanimous vote, Carol got elected our “canary in the coal mine.” (Between you and me, I think Gabby hid
under the bed during nominations.) So each day, she ventures out to the post office, bank, Gabby’s McDonald’s ham-
burger run, quickly learning which Publix has the most stock and making delivery drop offs to her Dad, now almost 94
years old sequestered in a local senior living community. But we’re certainly not complaining about anything, when most
of you are making sacrifices each day in our local hospitals and healthcare facilities. Never doubt for one minute, how
grateful we are in the Felix house.
And for the first time in more than 5 years when faced with cancelling our monthly South Florida Healthcare
Networking Group meeting, I’ve gone “Zoom” instead. So, on Thursday, March 26th with fingers crossed that Carol had
paid our internet bill, our group net virtually. Hopefully no one noticed that I still had my PJs on. I’ll be sure to let you
know how it goes next month. In the meantime, mark your calendars for our 2nd virtual meeting of SFHNG on April
9th at 8 a.m. Email me for more information.

(FYI: I thought about using the phrase “canary in the coal mine” about 3 days before Governor
Cuomo of New York started using it!)
