                                                                                              “You, you and you: panic.

                                                                                        The rest of you, come with me.”


                                                                                      I guess that’s the extent of my
                                                                                     advice to volunteers everywhere. My
                                                                                     secret “sauce” when it comes to vol-
                                                                                     unteering is delegate, delegate, dele-
                                                                                     gate. (Of course, according to Carol,
                                                                                     she’s usually who I delegate to.) But
                                                                                     show me a volunteer who can’t dele-
                                                                                     gate successfully and I’ll show you
                                                                                     someone reluctant to repeat the
                                                                                     experience. On the other hand, give
                                                                                     me a group of people — ready and
                                                                                     willing to not only follow directions
                                                                                     but able to assume responsibility as
                                                                                     well — and your result is usually a successful campaign, event, and organiza-
                                                                                     tion. Volunteering is a two-way street. Not only will you provide much need-
                                                                                     ed assistance, but you will learn as well because the rewards of volunteer
                                                                                     leadership are the people you meet along the way.
                                                                                      Of course, I’d be the first to admit my earliest volunteer efforts weren’t
                                                                                     exactly successful. P.S. 200 in Brooklyn is still standing, but I was probably
                                                                                     the only crossing guard in its history to be relieved of my official belt. And for
                                                                                     some reason, my inability to even lace up ice skates precluded me from refer-
                                                                                     eeing the boy’s ice hockey games.
                                                                                      But I think I’ve found my niche in my “twilight” years, serving as an active
                                                                                     board member in Rotary, the South Florida Healthcare Executive Forum
                                                                                     (SFHEF) and the South Florida Hospital & Healthcare Association (SFHHA).
                                                                                     “Active” is the important word here. You have to make sure volunteer is a
                                                                                     verb. And part of being active is delegating in such a way that you educate
                                                                                     and mentor those around you. Come to any SFHEF monthly meeting and
                                                                                     you’ll find local university students manning our check-in tables, learning
                                                                                     about the organization and connecting with our entire healthcare community.
                                                                                     It’s a win-win because many of our current active board members were once
                                                                                     those very students.
                                                                                                     The path ahead for healthcare is a precarious and uncer-
                                                                                                      tain one, making the healthcare volunteer community
                                                                                                        more important than ever. Whether it be a community
                                                                                                         health clinic whose funds have been threatened or a
                                                                                                          Meals on Wheels client in need of one more dinner,
                                                                                                          the value of a volunteer is without measure.
