Synthetic fibres are a kind of polymer. The together monomeric units is called
process of formation of polymer by linking “polymerization”.

            Activity 1

Investigate about the properties of synthetic fibres. Give special emphasis on tensile strength and nature of
intermolecular forces between their constituent monomeric units.

TYPES OF SYNTHETIC FIBRES surgical dresses.

            (a) Rayon or Viscose rayon or Artificial silk : It (iii) Used for making bed sheets and blankets.
is a kind of semi-synthetic fibre. It is similar to
silk obtained from silkworm. Rayon is
manufactured from cellulose fibres of wood
            pulp.

            Properties of rayon :

            (i) It is abrasion resistant.
            (ii) It is lustrous.

(iii) It is heat resistant, it can sustain a very
                 high temperature nearly 150°C.

(iv) It is an absorbent fabric i.e. suitable to
wear in hot and humid weather. Uses of Rayon
            (v) It can retain dyes.
                                                                    (b) Nylon : Nylon is the first commercially
            Uses of rayon :
successful synthetic polymer. It is made
            (i) It can be used for manufacturing entirely of coal, water and air. It consists of

automobile tyres. repeating units of amide molecule, thus it is a
(ii) Used for manufacturing of carpets and polyamide.
