Friction is the force that resists the relative motion. It always acts in the direction opposite to that of motion. Friction is
a kind of contact force and is affected by the nature of interacting surfaces.

Jack : What is friction? How study about friction.
does it act? What are the
                                       factors affecting it?

            FRICTION

Definition : The force that resists the relative
motion (motion of one body over another) is
            called friction.

Direction of Action of Frictional Force :
                                                                            Moving bus stops Football stops
Frictional force always acts in a direction
opposite to that of motion. Factors Affecting Friction :

Examples of action of frictional force in our Factors that affect the force, that is acting in
daily life : opposition to motion, include :

            (i) Friction allows a moving bus to stop when (i) Nature of surface on which the body is
               brakes are applied. being moved.
(ii) Football comes to rest on a floor due to (ii) Nature of surface of the body which is being
               friction. moved.

(iii)Walking on a slippery floor with litle friction (iii) Pressure on the body which is being
               is difficult. moved.
