18. Tenses
Look at the following sentences :
1. He paints well.
2. He painted well.
3. He will paint well.
In sentence (1), the verb ‘paints ’denotes an action done in the present time .
Such a verb is said to be in the present tense .
In sentence (2), the verb ‘painted ’ denotes an action done in the past time .
Such a verb is said to be in the past tense .
In sentence (3), the verb ‘will paint ’denotes an action that will be done or will go
on in the future time .
Such verb is said to be in the future tense .
The Simple Tense
Look at the following sentences :
1. Shreya dances very well.
2. Shreya danced very well yesterday.
3. Shreya will dance very well tomorrow.
In sentence (1), the verb ‘dances ’ simply shows an action done in the present
time. Hence, the verb is said to be in the simple present tense.
In sentence (2), the verb ‘danced ’ simply shows an action done in the past time .
