11. Uses of Articles (A, An and The)





          Vowels and Consonants : The English alphabet consists of 26 letters in all. Of

          these  , , , and  are vowels. The rest of them are consonants.
          Article – ‘A’
          Look at the following pictures :












                         a  pen                                horse                             banana

                         a  bat                                girl                              doctor
          The words pen, horse, banana, bat, girl and doctor are all nouns. All of them are

          singular in number. They begin with a consonant sound and we use ‘ ’ before

          Examples : a bag, a city, a school, etc.

          We use ‘ ’ before common nouns which are singular in number and begin with a

          consonant sound.
