(e) Fruits : Some fruits burst open or explode when they ripen and are thrown far
away. For example, fruit of Balsam.
2. Give examples of some seeds that are dispersed by animals.
Ans. Examples of some seeds that are dispersed by animals are Xanthium, Urena, etc.
3. How is the zygote formed in plants?
Ans. The stamen is the male reproductive part and pistil is the female reproductive part
in a flower. The anther in the stamen contains pollen grains, which produce the male
gamete. The ovary in the pistil contains one or more ovules. Each ovule contains the
female gamete, that is the egg. In sexual reproduction, a male and a female gamete
fuse to form a zygote.
4. Explain reproduction in plants by spore formation.
Ans. Vegetative propagation in Bryophyllum
In certain plants like Bryophyllum, small plantlets arise at the notch present on the
leaf margin. When these plantlets are put in soil they grow into a new plant.
5. Differentiate between pollination and fertilisation.
Ans. The transfer of pollen gains from the anther of a stamen to the stigma of a pistil is
called pollination. Wind, animals, insects & birds act as agents of pollination.
The process of fusion of the male & female gametes to form the zygote is called
fertilisation.
6. Draw a labelled diagram of a flower.
