3. What will happen if we do not have freshwater in future?
Ans. The consequences of not having freshwater in the future are as follows :
• Health Issues: Lack of access to clean drinking water will lead to severe health
problems, including dehydration, malnutrition and spread of waterborne
diseases.
• Agricultural Impact: Without freshwater, irrigation would be impossible, leading
to crop failures and food shortages.
• Economic Strain: Industries dependent on water, such as agriculture,
manufacturing and energy production, would face significant challenges.
• Environmental Damage: Ecosystems that rely on freshwater, such as wetlands
and rivers, would deteriorate, affecting biodiversity and wildlife.
• Social Conflict: Competition for limited water resources could lead to conflicts
and migration issues.
4. What is groundwater? Which sources are fed by groundwater?
Ans. Groundwater: Groundwater is the water that exists beneath the Earth's surface in
soil pore spaces and rock formations. It is stored in and moves through geological
formations called aquifers.
Sources Fed by Groundwater:
• Wells: Water is extracted from underground aquifers through wells.
• Springs: Natural sources where groundwater flows to the surface.
• Rivers and Streams: Many rivers and streams are fed by groundwater through
seepage from aquifers.
• Lakes: Some lakes receive inflow from groundwater.
5. Describe some methods to save water.
Ans. Some methods to save water are given as follows :
• Fix Leaks: Repair leaking taps, pipes and toilets to prevent water wastage.
• Water-Efficient Fixtures: Install water-saving faucets, showerheads and toilets.
• Rainwater Harvesting: Collect and store rainwater for various uses, including
irrigation and flushing toilets.
• Efficient Irrigation: Use methods such as drip irrigation or soaker hoses to water
plants more efficiently.
• Reduce Water Use: Practice judicious use of water, such as taking shorter
showers, turning off the tap while brushing teeth and washing clothes in a full
load.
• Reuse Water: Reuse water as and when possible, such as using leftover water
from cooking or washing vegetables for plants.
