P. 65

v The amount of water present in the soil is called soil moisture. Soil moisture is the highest

                in clayey soil.

v The water-absorption capacity is the ability of the soil to absorb or retain water. It depends
on how porous the soil is. Clayey and loamy soils can absorb water in large quantities.

v Soil texture describes the proportion of the soil particles and the fineness or coarseness of
                the soil.

v Due to the presence of different minerals and nutrients in the soil, different soils take on

                different colours.
v Soil pH is an indicator of the acidity or alkalinity of the soil. It is an important factor that

plays a role in deciding what kind of plants grow in a specific soil.
v Soils have different capacities of holding air.

v Several factors determine which type of soil is found in which region. These are: temperature,

                humidity, rainfall, wind and sunlight.
v The type of soil at a place, along with the climate, decides the kind of plants or crops that

                can be grown there.

v Removal of the fertile topsoil by wind or water is called soil erosion.
v There are various factors that cause soil erosion, such as wind, water, deforestation,

                overgrazing by cattle, etc.

v Several measures should be taken to prevent soil erosion.
v When soil gets contaminated and its quality deteriorates, it is known as soil pollution.

v Soil conservation is the protection of soil from erosion and other types of degradation, so as
to maintain soil fertility and productivity.
