P. 294
A number of young women are operating a telephone secretarial service from
their own homes. Usually when the service is operated on a small scale, all
the subscribers to it are located in one building. For instance, you may be
able to secure 30 to 50 doctors in a near-by building as subscribers to your
service.
The service for subscribers varies in accordance with the need for it. One man
may want only a noon-hour service, another a day service, and another a 24-
hour service. There are other variations, of course. Holidays and Sundays
may or may not be included, according to the subscriber’s requirements. In
addition to handling incoming calls, the service may also relay calls to
subscribers. Charges are based upon the type of service required.
Even the physically handicapped can find some measure of financial
independence in this work. A young woman living in Marion, Indiana, who
has been an invalid for a number of years makes her living by operating a
physicians’ telephone service from her home. Although she can get about
only by means of a wheel chair, and is often confined to her bed, this
courageous young woman manages a business of her own that any young
person would be proud to own. She has arranged with the doctors of her
community to keep her informed of their whereabouts and their patients may
call her at any hour.
Arrangements can be made with the local telephone company to rent the
necessary equipment. In view of the fact that the company invests
considerable money in an undertaking of this sort, it must be assured as to the
character and financial integrity of the lessee. Building up a service of this
sort requires little but a sense of responsibility, initiative, and a willingness to
work. If there is no such telephone service in your town, talk it over with the
local telephone manager. Such a service may be just what your town needs
and, incidentally, the answer to your problem of what to do to make some
money.
