established a new business—one with very little overhead and soon quite
profitable. It was only a year or so until every inch of floor space was
crowded with the tools and machinery of the master printer. The news got
around somehow that “Dad” was still turning out superior printing, and he
has never had a dull minute, or had to solicit a single job. With only a young
man to kick the press, and a girl occasionally for bindery work, this man who
was “too old to work any longer” has often averaged $100 a week clear profit
in his little brick printing shop.

Why? Well, perhaps, “Dad” himself has explained the secret of his success
by quoting from Emerson on one of his folders: “If a man write a better book,
preach a better sermon, or build a better mouse trap than his neighbor, though
he build his house in the woods, the world will make a beaten path to his
door.” Mouse traps or printing—it is all the same. The man who has achieved
distinction in any kind of craftsmanship, who is still strong in body and
young in spirit, need not fear the specter of old age.

proved by Lee Clarke, who has averaged $15 daily by snapping his camera
around Chicago during the past several months.

Clarke started “shooting” human interest photographs when he entered a
contest conducted by an out-of-town newspaper. The paper promised to pay
five dollars for each photograph published. Clarke decided he could pay for a
camera with money accruing to him from photographing unusual subjects for
the contest, and bought a second-hand camera for which he paid $73.
Included were two packs of films. He made “close-up” photographs of points
of interest in and around Chicago which he mailed to the newspaper. A week
later he received a check for $80 in payment for sixteen of the twenty-four
pictures. He did not win the prize, but in the next three weeks received
checks totaling $70 for photographs from various newspaper syndicates and
advertising agencies throughout the country. That you will agree, was mighty
