Don’t strive to be perfect, strive for continuous improvement
The biggest blocks to creativity are striving for perfection and fear of risk. Failures and
imperfection are essential components of the successful idea generation process.
The initial ideas that you create often have flaws and require refinement before they are
implemented. If you strive to create a perfect idea that will succeed guaranteed, you block your
creativity and will only be able to reiterate old ideas that worked in the past.
When great writers write a book, they first write everything that comes to their mind on paper. Then
this initial draft goes through many iterations of editing and becomes a great book. When you think
about a question, your subconscious will rarely give you a fully refined answer; most often it is just a
hint, an insight or a partial idea. Just like a writer edits his or her writing, you should improve your
ideas before they become products, processes or actions. Don’t strive to create perfect ideas, strive to
create many ideas. They can always be improved later.
