Most importantly, my wife, kids and teammates
will tell you that I was myself again and the options
were limitless.
What was the lesson I learned?
I had ideated myself and our company into the
proverbial corner. We had become a company of undis-
ciplined ideas—when one business concept did not
work, we simply came up with another. I had failed
to realize that my type of energy, madness, talent or
whatever you want to call it was dangerous if not bal-
anced with a disciplined partner, process and people.
Great companies and great leaders recognize the
need for Idea Monkeys to drive innovation. But they
also know the importance of management, guidance and
practices to keep the best thinkers and ideas on course.
