Church Readings, and Music Selections
There are many opportunities for family members and loved ones to participate in the funeral services. Eulogies are the perfect opportunity to express fond memories of our loved ones. Most families choose to offer these sentimental stories while at the funeral home, often during the wake or visitation. Occasionally, Words of Remembrance may be offered at the church before the religious rite begins. In accordance with the rite, these brief words must be delivered by one person and specifically related to the deceased’s faith and how they lived to share in that mission. Those families who wish to share more personal stories are encouraged to deliver their eulogy at the funeral home, where there are no restrictions on time or content.
The Catholic Rite of Burial, often referred to simply as Mass features readings, music, and other tributes which family members are invited to offer. The mass includes four hymns (songs), these are the Processional (entrance) hymn, the Offertory hymn, the Communion hymn, and a Recessional (exit) hymn. You may select one person to offer a reading from the Old Testament; one person to offer a reading from the New Testament, one person to offer the Prayer of the Faithful, and up to two people to offer the Gifts of Bread and Wine. The hymns and readings must be selected from those intended for use as part of the Rite from options prepared by the Church.
