What is Diabetes?
Diabetes is a medical condition
that affects the body’s ability to
metabolize carbohydrates
(sugars). Type I diabetes is a
condition where the body does
not make insulin, which is needed
to break down carbohydrates.
Type II diabetes, which is more
common, is a condition where
insulin is less effective in breaking
down carbohydrates. People
who are overweight, especially those with increased belly
fat, are at increased risk for developing diabetes. Other
risk factors include inactivity, family history, poor diet,
and ethnicity.
Usually diabetes is discovered during regular blood work
ordered by a physician. The symptoms of diabetes are
excessive thirst, excessive urination, unusual weight loss,
blurry vision, excessive hunger, increased fatigue, and
irritability.
