Condition And Causes
Lymphedema (lim”fé-de’mah)
is a condition that is noted for
irregular swelling. It is most
commonly seen in the arms
and legs. The swelling,
otherwise known as edema,
is related to a lymph system
that is not working efficiently.
This allows protein rich fluid to collect in an
area which is seen as swelling.

There are different reasons why a lymph system
may not be functioning well. Some individuals
may be born with a lymph system that is not
normal. This is not nearly as common as
lymphedema that occurs because of trauma
or disease to the lymphatics. Damage can
happen from accidents such as severe fractures
or from certain types of surgical procedures
and radiation therapy. These can all increase
a person’s chance to get lymphedema.
