12. Three Things Christians should know About a Mustard Seed.
A mustard seed.
In the four gospels Jesus uses the analogy of common day life experience to
explain further the dynamics of the kingdom of heaven. In one of those stories
also called Parables in the New Testament Christ uses a mustard seed to
demonstrate how faith functions in God’s kingdom.
The illustrations used by Jesus are some of the most amazing ways a teacher of
his calibre sought to use when explaining to his audience like in the new
dispensation called Christendom in ways that common place people could grasp
and interrogate for themselves.
Take for example the parable of the mustard seed. Why Christ picks such a tiny
thing as an emblem through which the rabbi could teach his disciples the
fundamental principles of faith only God knows.
In the oriental languages lessons were conveyed mostly through illustrations logic
sayings parables proverbs word play and the culture of the day relied mostly on
its oral traditions to pass knowledge to the next generation.
In this parable Jesus picks the tiniest of seeds usually 1-2 millimetres in diameter.
The mustards seeds are of various colours depending on which plant it come
from. The colours range from yellowish brown to white and black.
Germination.
This seed usually takes up to ten days to sprout depending on the conditions it
finds itself in. When it attains full maturity it grows into a shrub that is as tall as a
horse and its rider.
Some have come to conclude that when this shrub reaches its full length it
matures into a tree tall enough that a man riding his horse can pass under it.
The growth of God’s kingdom.
