Honoring a Legacy: The Story of the Fallen Rider

In 2016, my life took a turn when we moved to Nigel.
My mother and I had just begun to reconnect, and
amidst this new chapter, a tragic event unfolded that
would shape a significant part of my journey. A
beautiful young woman named Mariska Flemix, full of
life and joy, was involved in a tragic bike accident on
January 31, 2016, in Krugersdorp. She was just 28
years old. Her passing, marked by vibrant memories
and a sudden, sorrowful end, moved me deeply.
Driven by the desire to honor Mariska and offer
something meaningful to her grieving parents, I
started a Facebook page to create a tribute to her
memory. Thus, the Fallen Rider Memorial Wall was
born. The purpose was clear: to remember those we
have lost in the biking community and to provide a
space where their lives and legacies could be
celebrated.
Since then, I had the honor of meeting Mariska’s
mother, Tannie Bets Flemix, and her late husband,
Oom Hans, who is also remembered on the wall.
Sadly, Oom Hans passed away on October 25, 2022.
Their stories, like those of many others, are a
testament to the impact and depth of loss felt in our
community.
Over the years, the wall has grown, thanks to the
support and collaboration of many incredible
individuals. Oom Nols Coetzee, initially skeptical,
became a cherished friend and supporter. Dawie
Naude's assistance was crucial in setting up a group
to keep the page safe, and Tannie Bev Botha, a
dedicated admin, was a constant pillar of support until
she passed away this year 09/07/2024..
The Fallen Rider Memorial Wall stands strong today,
not just as a memorial but as a beacon of community
and resilience. I am immensely grateful to all who
have supported and contributed to this project,
ensuring that the memories of those we have lost
continue to live on.
Thank you to everyone who has been a part of this
journey, for your unwavering support and loyalty.
