The ASME Adaptive Structures and Material Systems Technical Committee Monday, September 10th
organized the Best Student Paper Competition as part of the ASME/ Presidio C, 3rd Floor
AIAA Conference on Smart Materials, Adaptive Structures and Integrated
Systems (SMASIS). Entrants were judged by a committee of smart High school students from STEM Early College High School and Space
materials and structures experts. Finalists are required to present their Club from Communities In Schools of San Antonio will be attending the
papers at The Student Best Paper Sessions on Monday, September 10, conference to participate in a graduate student-led Smart Materials and
2018. All finalists will be honored during the Pioneer Banquet, Tuesday Structures Mini-Workshop. The high school students will learn about
September 11, 2018. smart materials, complete hands-on activities with smart materials, and
tour the hardware competition.

BEST STUDENT HARDWARE COMPETITION II – Can you work with your new friends and colleagues to escape the room?
FINALISTS You’ll have 60 minutes to work together to solve puzzles and earn your
freedom. This is a casual event, wear comfortable clothes and shoes. Meet
3:40 PM – 5:40 PM in the hotel lobby at 7:45. The escape room is a short walk (0.4 miles) from

The ASME Adaptive Structures and Material Systems Technical Committee
organized the Best Student Hardware Paper Competition as part of the
ASME/AIAA Conference on Smart Materials, Adaptive Structures and
Intelligent Systems (SMASIS). Entrants in the competition will be judged
by a committee of smart materials and structures experts and a list of
finalists will be determined based upon the technical paper. Finalists
are required to present their papers at a regular conference session
and must participate in a special exhibit session on September 10, 2018
to demonstrate hardware operation and to present a poster explaining
the nature of the project. All finalists will be honored during the Pioneer
Banquet on Tuesday, September 11, 2018.
