Welcome
FROM THE CONFERENCE CHAIRS
On behalf of the Organizing Committee, it is our distinct pleasure to welcome you to the 2017 ASME Dynamic
Systems and Control Conference at Sheraton Hotel Tysons Corner, Virginia, October 11-13, 2017. This is the flagship
annual conference of the Dynamic Systems and Controls (DSC) Division of ASME. This year we celebrate the first
decade of running this event successfully by volunteers of the society as a standalone conference of our DSC
Division. Prior to 2008, this conference was part of the larger ASME IMECE. Each year the conference attracts
original contributions of many researchers, engineers, and scientists from academia and industry in a variety of
subareas of dynamic systems and controls, including but not limited to the themes of the Division’s Technical
Committees (TCs.)
We, all members of the organizing committee, have been honored to have the privilege of planning and organizing
this exciting event in 2017. This year’s technical program contains 257 original papers organized in 47 regular and
invited sessions, three plenary sessions (two plenary lectures and one Nyquist lecture), one additional award
winning Oldenburger talk delivered at an evening banquet – a landmark tradition of the conference. Included in
the program are special events such as the student best paper presentation session for award nominated papers
an industry match making session. The conference hosts several technical committee meetings organized by the
DSC Division’s TCs. The event also offers a number of exhibits by both academic and industry sponsors.
This year’s technical program continues the prior years’ tradition of high quality content, as reflected by ever more
selectivity in the review process. After thorough online peer reviews of all papers, a committee of an independent
editorial board, the Conference Editorial Board Chair, and the Conference Program Chair selected the accepted
articles and subsequently the Conference Program Chair organized the revised final manuscripts into the Final
Program contained herein. The conference registrants can access the articles on-line at the designated ASME site.
Azim Eskandarian The success of DSCC 2017 is based on the hard work and outstanding contributions of the authors/co-authors,
Conference who have submitted their original research for publication and presentation at this conference. The rich technical
General Chair contents include both fundamentals and a wide variety of applications of the dynamic systems and control
discipline. Special thanks are due to DSC Technical Committees, which have organized 14 invited sessions and one
Marcia O’Malley special session in key application areas such as Automotive and Transportation, Aerospace, Biomedical, Energy
Conference Systems, Manufacturing, and Robotics, among other areas.
Program Chair A high quality conference of this size could not have been possible but for the tireless and selfless contributions by
the enthusiastic and energetic volunteers of our community, aided by the dedicated efforts of our ASME
colleagues. We recognize the members/chairs of the Organizing committee: Hashem Ashrafiuon, Invited Sessions;
Pinhas Ben-Tzvi, Workshops, Tutorials and Special Sessions; Hosam Fathy, Students and Young Members; Marcello
Canova, Exhibits and Industry; Maggie Chen, Publications; Rifat Sipahi, Publicity; Fen Wu, Conference Editorial
Board; and Alexander Leonessa, Finance and Registration Chair; Erin Dolan, ASME Program Manager and Stacey
Cooper, ASME Conference Toolbox Coordinator. We are grateful to all the TC Chairs and members as well as to
the Associate Editors of the Conference Editorial Board, Program Committee members, session organizers,
session chairs/co-chairs, and paper reviewers for their valuable assistance, and to all other ASME staff members
who have assisted in the process behind the scenes.
Of course, this conference and all other activities within the DSC Division community are possible because of the
volunteer efforts of DSCD Executive Committee. We thank all members of this committee for their continued
support and leadership.
Finally, we thank the entire ASME DSC community, especially those who are attending this conference and making
it a true success. We invite you to attend as many sessions and talks that interest you, confer or discuss technical
issues, offer your valuable opinions, meet with acquainted colleagues, network, and take home new ideas,
2 enthusiasm, and excitement for more discovery. We wish you an enjoyable and productive experience at this
DSCC 2017.
