Berlin
It was May 1990...six months after the fall of the Berlin Wall. Several NJC students and staff, including Lyn Perrenoud and myself, and my wife and two boys, were touring
this fascinating city which was still trying to come to grips with its new identity. It would soon become the new capital city of a united Germany, and although its most famous and divisive landmark had already been brought down, confusion and chaos were still very much a part of everyday life. As an example, we were not able to secure a hotel in the
former West Berlin for our school trip, so
one of the largest hotels in the former East Berlin provided our accommodations for our extended weekend. However, we were told that the only way our students and staff could pass between the two former cities, even though
the borders were apparently ‘open’, was with our tour guide and only with our entire group. Checkpoint Charlie and the Brandenburg Gate were still operational as entry points between the two former cities. Our students were anxious to explore both the east and west sides
