University Placement
THROUGHOUT THE FALL SEMESTER
LEADING UP TO UNIVERSITY APPLICATION
The Director of University Guidance leads group seminars for the entire student body regarding university choice, selection, scholarship applications, process and deadlines, while o ering one-on-one counselling to students. Online resources and related guidance for researching university programs are readily available.
SEPTEMBER
Each student is scheduled for a one-on-one follow up discussion with the Director of University Guidance to continue discussing university plans. Any ne-tuning to course selection also takes place as required.
EARLY OCTOBER
Students who wish to explore international opportunities for undergraduate or even their graduate degrees are welcome to participate in one of the annual Council of International Schools (www.cois.org) university fairs hosted in Zurich and Geneva. Vying for the attention of students from schools in Switzerland, over 90 post-secondary institutions from Europe and Asia exhibit. NJC students have the chance to meet representatives and learn about programs never considered before.
MID-OCTOBER
Despite the physical distance, parents need not feel separated from the university placement process. As much as this is a year of growth, maturity and new independence for students, parents are welcome to visit NJC at
Program
EARLY SPRING PRIOR TO DEPARTURE
Highlights
In the early spring prior to departure, students receive a Guidance Package encouraging them to conduct preliminary research to begin narrowing their university and program choices. Since no amount of research can replace how a campus feels, it is recommended that students visit preferred universities pre- departure to get a personal sense of the university communities they are considering.
MAY PRIOR TO DEPARTURE
In May, a private consultation regarding course selection and preliminary program interests takes place between the family and our Director of University Guidance. These appointments are scheduled to coincide with the
annual Enrolled Student Reception in Toronto, and they are conducted in person or via telephone/Skype.
ORIENTATION TRIP WEEK
During the first week of the academic year—Orientation Trip Week— general discussions about the study of AP and early admission processes are reviewed.
THE NJC DIFFERENCE
Our graduates stand out in a sea of university applications because they have the academic and adventurous pro les that universities seek. NJC students are encouraged to be curious, innovative and ready to make a di erence in the world...which was Leonard Wilde’s vision over 60 years ago!
• NJC welcomes students from across Canada, the US and internationally. The entering class academic average is well over 80% each year
• This year, 96% of our graduates were Ontario Scholars (which is the achievement of an academic standing of 80% or above)
• In recent years, NJC students have earned results up to 20% higher than the global average for Advanced Placement (AP) examinations
• NJC students regularly earn scholarships and awards to study at prestigious universities in Canada, the US, UK and beyond
• Over the past 5 years, more than 50% of each class has opted to attend universities considered to be the best in Canada - Queen’s, McGill, Western, University of Toronto and UBC
ADDITIONAL RESOURCES
NJC provides a breadth of guidance services, including active counselling and ongoing support of students who, in addition to top Canadian schools, wish to apply to US colleges and universities in the UK. We achieve an enviable placement record annually. For those interested in engaging the services of a consultant to assist further with US and UK applications, NJC is pleased to provide referrals.
