Graduation
Class of 2018
8“Monday after graduation is the strangest and most bitter-sweet day of the year for most educators, and certainly for me. A school of course is not a school without students, and for the past ten months we have greeted students coming down the lane-way or coming down from the train station every morning; it will be very sad on Monday morning not to see any students making their way to their classes. Of course it’s always pleasant to think summer holidays are just around the corner, but that combination of emotions, I always find a challenge. This was particularly unusual this week; because, as a retiring Head of School, this week was the last time that I greeted the students before their final exams.” —Bill Boyer
On Friday, June 15, the Class of 2018 celebrated the conclusion of their unforgettable year at Neuchâtel Junior College on a marvellous, sunny spring day. NJC’s 62nd graduating class proudly walked across the stage and received their diplomas at the Temple du Bas in downtown Neuchâtel. The graduation ceremony was followed by a reception in the gardens of the historic Hôtel du Peyrou. One could say that Mr. Boyer was graduating this day too, for this was his last as NJC’s Head of School.
Proud parents, siblings, grandparents, and pension families in attendance were addressed by keynote speaker and distinguished NJC alumnus, Dr. Daniel Andreae ’72, and were treated to musical and theatrical performances by our talented graduates.
“These are memories and experiences, which, right now, are influencing your lives; but I’ll tell you, as you look back years from now, you’ll see how the threads of your experience here, at NJC, have been woven into the fabric of your life in ways that you don’t realize now; whether it’s travel, the people you’ve met, or confidence gained.”
—Dr. Daniel Andreae ‘72
Once all of the awards were presented—including the Leonard Wilde Award winner, Emma Black ’18 and the Governor General’s Medal recipient, Mona Murphy ’18—the ceremony closed with an engaging address by Class Valedictorian, Alana Reich ’18.
