The Marcel Jeanneret Scholarship Fund
The 2017-2018 school year saw the inaugural awarding of the Marcel Jeanneret Scholarship to Gabe Richards ’18. Established in 2016 to honour the esteemed and long-serving Past President of NJC’s Canadian Advisory Committee, the namesake Scholarship was established by a group of past Canadian Advisory Committee Chairs—David Binet ‘76, Max Thompson ‘88, Hugh Hall ‘71 and Gordon Piercey—along with current Chair, Sally Morris.
Gabe Richards grew up hearing about the extraordinary year her mother, Lesley Gregory ’78, spent at Neuchâtel Junior College. She dreamed of attending the program and says that she is grateful to have received this scholarship, which gave her an experience that she says can only be described as “life changing.” Gabe believes that bursary & scholarship programs make this extraordinary experience accessible to more young people, and offers them the opportunity to better themselves.

growth at Neuchâtel Junior College. Over her ten-month stay, she not only achieved top grades, but was also a member of the girls tennis team, of the French exchange program at local Swiss high school Lycée Jean Piaget, was a delegate at the Model United Nations in Berlin, a member of the NJC debate team at NESDA in Luxembourg, and a member of the service trip team that travelled to Kenya with Me to We.
Gabe says that she was “100%, hands down” inspired by NJC, where she explains that the people further enrich the experience beyond what a typical high school can offer. “Everyone at this school is ambitious and in it together – like one huge family. I really love that.” Gabe enjoyed seeing her peers try new things and push their boundaries, which she says, in turn, motivated her to do the same and continue the cycle by inspiring someone else with her actions.
When asked to give one piece of advice to this year’s recipients of the Marcel Jeanneret Scholarship, Gabe says that “this sounds just plain cliché, but say yes to every single opportunity that is thrown at or handed to you! This year is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity so make every single aspect of it unforgettable.”
Gabe Richards ’18 is attending St. Francis Xavier University in Nova Scotia for Science, after having completed a Leader-in-Training program this summer at Northwaters Langskib Camp, where she intends to work in Summer 2019 after her first year of university.

One of the best aspects of Gabe’s year abroad was her pension family. When asked to share her favourite part of living with the Pirellis in Neuchâtel, Gabe struggled to narrow down the long list of reasons why she loved her pension. She says that the Pirellis were a loving family who always made sure that she, and her housemate Julia, felt taken care of, and whether it be homesickness or physical illness, they always made sure the students were comfortable and happy and helped them feel better. Additionally, she says that they made the best homemade Italian food that she has ever tasted!
As both an academically and athletically inclined teenager, Gabe had a busy schedule of extracurriculars at her school in Caledon, Ontario, and was able to take advantage of new, exciting opportunities for
