“In the 1990s, Orvis had a contest where people could submit their own
knots. We had all the knots tested on an Instron (knot testing machine)
and a guy name Larry Becker submitted this knot, which some people
claimed was another knot, but the truth was nobody had ever seen it
anywhere. It’s a very simple knot to tie. Perk and Dave Perkins (the CEO
and vice chairman of Orvis, respectively) are very good anglers and they
use it exclusively to tie on a fly.
“One of the biggest benefits of this knot is that it’s consistent. If you’ve
ever been involved with knot tests—and I have been—you realize that
most of the knots people use are very inconsistent. For instance, a Clinch
Knot or an Improved Clinch Knot may be close to 95 percent, if tied
perfectly. But we found if you take a really good knot tier, and he or she
ties ten knots, you’re going to find 20 or 30 percent variation in the
