Club Drive and Lunch to Historic Theebine
Many will remember RCC member Grayham Bickley who organised a super route through the countryside to Theebine a few years ago and Judy Bickley, his widow and RCC Secretary, revived the trip for our September outing.
At about 130ks it was a lengthy drive but more than one member commented on how nice it was to have a longer run. Although the morning started off somewhat overcast when we met at Cooroy, when we resumed after our morning tea stop at Widgee the sunshine burst through and by the time we arrived at Theebine it was hot and sunny.
The Theebine Hotel was built in 1909 and is a very traditional Queenslander building. In the early 1900's the hotel was known as the ‘Kilkivan/Theebine Junction Hotel’, built to service the train junction opposite, opening up the South Burnett. The restoration work on this beautiful old Queenslander Hotel will help to protect its history.
In the beer garden out the back a big BBQ area was arranged surrounded by many long tables to accommodate our hungry travellers.
With a reasonable menu choice available it was noted that the steaks were cooked to perfection ‘melting like butter in the mouth’ was one description! I don’t think anyone had room for pudding/dessert!!!
Another advantage of this venue is the huge amount of parking available around the Hotel and alongside the railway tracks.
Members took their own routes home, some going down the Bruce Highway whilst others took the country route again to enjoy the uncluttered roads and beautiful views.
Our thanks to Judy Bickley for organising the day.
