Anne and John McGovern came across a re-enactment of the ‘London to Brighton’ Vintage Car Rally right here in Queensland.
The World's
Oldest Car Rally re-enacted at Burnett Heads
One of our favourite bike rides is from the caravan park at Bargara to the marina at Burnett Heads. The pathway winds its way through the ‘Mon Repos Turtle Centre’, and along absolutely pristine coastline. We had an added bonus this time when we happened upon the Burnett Heads Vintage Car Club celebrating the 125th anniversary of the London to Brighton car rally.
Being the world's oldest rally, and only pre-1905 vehicles being eligible, it is very exclusive. There aren't many of those left in the world, but Burnett Heads car enthusiasts Chris and Jenny Sorensen have three of them. They have taken all of them to London for the rally over the years, but Covid brought a halt to that – hence the re-enactment.
Among the oldest cars were a steam powered 1901 Grout and a 1904 DeDion Bouton that once belonged to Bert Hinkler's sister. It was the second car ever to be registered in Bundaberg.
We had the privilege of being shown around Chris Sorenson's shed, which was an amazing setup. He had absolutely everything there to keep his veteran cars running.
We often come across car shows on our travels, but this one was certainly special, and the people were so friendly and enthusiastic, much like our Roadrunner friends.
