Drive and picnic @ Somerset Dam
Sunday 12 November 2023
– RCC MEMBERS AND FRIENDS – + THE BRITISH FORD CAR CLUB OF QUEENSLAND
Somerset Dam
The day was exceptionally good – clear sky, bright sunshine and HOT for those travelling in drop-top convertibles.
At Somerset Dam it was still hot, but a pleasing breeze wafted in across the water from time to time making the picnicking very pleasant.
As trip organiser, my thanks to Will Johns who set everyone off on the road from Eumundi with 10+ cars in convoy down to the lookout at Balmoral Park where Judy Bickley and I welcomed everyone to the morning tea stop. I had my leg pulled repeatedly regarding info re ‘no toilet’ facilities at Balmoral on the directions sheet – but better safe than sorry !!!
Then we were back on the road for the 85ks down to the Dam through very pretty countryside but we were all struck and shocked at how brown and dried-up all the vegetation was as we progressed south.
Thanks to Gail and Graeme Adams who had arrived early at Somerset Dam Spit to ensure parking spots were available for everyone – perfectly placed in a super area surrounded by the water buzzing with jet skis and boats. They had also managed to ‘bag’ two covered picnic tables which provided welcome shade for munchies.
It was great to meet the guys and ladies from the British Ford Car Club who were somewhat disappointed that more of their members were not able to come along.
It has to be said, that we were shorter on members this year too... but we said that those who did not come along were the ones to miss out on a most enjoyable day.
Thanks to those who complimented me on the ‘excellent’ route directions – I note that no-one got lost!!! And others told me they were thankful to find convenient toilets beside the road in Kenilworth + at Somerset too lol haha...
