   October 27 – 6 November
If you went on our drive and picnic to Somerset Dam earlier this year you possibly noted this Peugeot – hmmm yes, many commented on its battered appearance!
Bruce Firth is a member of the British Ford Car Club who were our guests on that occasion.
Bruce was actually doing the trip to Somerset as a trial for various aspects of the vehicle before he set off on the adventure of doing the Perth to Sydney this year.
The Peugeot pictured at Somerset Dam earlier this year.
The original London to Sydney Marathon took place from 24th November to
17th December 1968
98 cars started in London and travelled via France, Italy, Yugoslavia, Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bombay (India). Some of these places you wouldn’t go to now!
Bombay to Fremantle for 73 cars, by ship for 9 days.
The Australian leg departed Perth on 14 December via Youanmi, (central WA), Lake King, Norseman, Eucla, Ceduna, Port Augusta, Flinders Rangers, Broken Hill, Menindee, Ivanhoe, Omeo, Ingebyra, Nowra and finished in Sydney:
5,664kms in 67hrs - crazy times in 1968.
The rerun will take 11 days.
The 1968 Marathon was won by a Hillman Hunter driven by Andrew Cowan, Brian Coyle and Colin Malkin.
2nd was a BMC Austin 1800 with Paddy Hopkirk, Tony Nash and Alec Poole,
3rd place went to the Australian crew of Ian Vaughan, Bob Forsyth and Jack Ellis in a Ford Falcon XT GT.
