The ‘HANDBRAKES’ make their views clear!!
When it was announced last month that the ladies coffee mornings would henceforward become a general club event, and the name would be dropped, it caused much dismay, discussion and many lady members jamming on the brakes in protest. Not that they are anti men!
While some of the ladies had felt that ‘Handbrakes’ was a derogatory title, others viewed it as very ‘amusing and tongue in cheek’ – and as one lady noted: “after all, we are a car club!”
It had also always been the custom for a few husbands/partners to drive their ladies to the event, and occupy a nearby table or even go to the café next door.
To resolve the matter, the President and Management Committee decided to circulate a poll to all the ladies in the Club to get a happy outcome which would be hopefully pleasing to all.
Not all of the ladies responded, but those who did voted by majority...
• to keep the name ‘Handbrakes’
• to continue with a regular ladies morning tea • to welcome the husbands/partners as before • welcome other friends who cared to join in.
They also agreed to continue with the occasional joint morning teas – such as the June event where 30+ members of both genders had already registered.
Any thoughts/suggestions, ideas for venues etc. are welcome.
The July ladies morning tea will be on 23rd July at Fairhill Botanic Gardens, Ninderry (Yandina) at 10am. See page 13.
