John McGovern reminisces about his involvement with Ch 7 in the ‘80s.
‘Racecam’ was invented by George Healy of Channel 7 and developed by Chief Engineer John Porter. It was first used by Peter Williamson in his 2ltr Toyota Celica. I got involved with Channel 7 in the early '80s when they wanted a rotary contact unit made so they would not have to unwind the transmission cable from the camera. We came up with a gold-plated stainless and copper unit that did the trick.
I then got involved with a camera housing to mount on
Indy cars for ABC USA. It was fully CNC machined from aluminium to protect the electronics from ignition systems in the race car. This unit also used a cartridge of clear 35mm film which was in front of the lens to keep off the bugs and dirt – later a wiper was added and all was controlled via a microwave link to a helicopter back to the studio: a great Aussie first!

I have great sympathy for this person... how many of you have – like me – been forced to drive the Bathurst road/track at a meagre 60km/h and was dismayed at having to creep around it in such a sad fashion!
Has any RCC member actually driven Bathurst at a racing speed? I can think of just one who might! No names no pack drill, but his initials are FL!!! If anyone has – please let us know about your experience for next month.
