Bostard was not happy about giving up the lead like that late in the race so he took it out on the rest of the field in moto two. He led from wire to wire amassing a huge thirty second lead at the finish. McCarty on the other hand suffered from a dismal start and could only climb up to ninth. Bostard’s 2-1 moto scores had him sitting pretty heading into the third and final moto.
Bostard once again nailed a solid start rounding lap one in second place. He
was in prime position and in control of the championship when disaster struck. He went down on lap two and by the time he remounted he was buried in twenty-first place thirty-one seconds away from the leader. But what would happen next would be one of the best performances of the weekend. Bostard surged to thirteenth place and cut the lead down to twenty- three seconds in just one lap. He continued that fiery pace passing six more riders and gaining six more seconds on the following lap. He was on a rampage and just a few laps later, at the white flag, he was all the way up to third place! With just one lap to go, he had two seconds between him and race leader Jay Wagner (who must have thought he had the title wrapped up with 3-2-1 scores). And on that final lap, Bostard would throw down the fastest lap of the race by four seconds on his way past McCarty for second (revenge for the late race pass in moto one) and then right on by Wagner for the lead and the championship! It was one of the greatest championship clinching performances seen at Loretta Lynn’s in quite some time. And thirty-three years after his first appearance at The Ranch, Terry Bostard is finally a Loretta Lynn’s champion.
