“RIDE ON KENTUCKY KID”
“It was obviously a huge loss just because my family and their family have been so close since I was born. When I started racing at four, Earl helped me until I went pro -- he did everything for me. I looked up to all three of his sons when I was growin’ up because of what they did on the dirt and then movin’ to asphalt -- I got into road racing because of them, especially Nicky
-- to see what he accomplished as a small town kid and to see him write down his dreams and pretty much accomplish all of them was pretty cool. The last three years, both Roger and Nicky have been like brothers to me. I spent the last three winters with them out in California training and when we’re back home doing our cycling and everything, it’s a close bond between all of us. It was a huge loss and the past week and
a half was really tough. A freak accident just kinda opens up your eyes to see that anything can happen -- y’know, he’s rode motorcycles his whole life, going 200mph on a MotoGP bike, and for something to happen on a bicycle kinda makes it a little more tough.”
