CHOLT
Mathew Scholtz sits second place in the Bazzaz Superstock 1000 points chase after a consistent weekend at VIRginia International Raceway where he finished second in both races, putting him in a solid position heading into the fourth round of the series at Road America. The South African native joined
the action last year at the midway point of the season and made his MotoAmerica debut in Wisconsin, therefore providing him with a little bit of track knowledge heading into the weekend for the first time
this season. Scholtz managed to grab a podium finish in his maiden race at the track last year, albeit in unfavorable conditions. Nonetheless, the track knowledge in tandem with the speed that he’s showcased throughout the season will make him a favorite to stand on the top step of the podium in Elkhart Lake.
Scholtz seemed to find his speed from last year’s outing at Road America almost immediately as he impressed in the opening day of practice by setting the third fastest time overall. He was able to carry that confidence into Superpole where he put his Westby Racing Yamaha in the middle of the second row by setting the fifth fastest time of the session with a 2:13.943. As the lights went out above the grid for the start of the first race, Scholtz experienced a small wheelie that caused him to lose a couple of positions heading into the first corner.
