Z MATHEW SCHOLTZ | BAZZAZ SUPERSTOCK 1000
He fell back to the edge of the top ten, but the South African managed to work his way back to eighth place at the end of the opening lap. He spent a couple of laps vying for position with the TOBC Racing Yamaha of Danny Eslick as the pair of them did their best to stick to the exhaust of Bobby Fong. On the third lap, he managed to make a pass stick on the rider out of Oklahoma and himself and Fong broke away in a battle of their own. Scholtz forced his way past his championship rival momentarily, he lost the position just as quickly as he gained it as the two of them began to separate themselves
in a lonely battle for second in the Superstock 1000 class. They exchanged fast lap times throughout the latter half of the race, ever so slightly inching towards Jake Lewis ahead of them. Scholtz did
the intelligent thing as the two of them pulled each other closer to the leader, refraining from any silly overtaking attempts in order to optimize their lap times. They closed the gap to just under one second with only a lap to go, but their own battle for position took precedence as they approached the checkered flag. Scholtz attempted to slipstream the ZX-10R to the line, but he wasn’t able to get the drive that he needed and he was forced to settle for third place in the Superstock 1000 class as
a result of the first race. In the second race, Scholtz managed to improve his jump off the line and found himself in the thick of the action on the opening lap. Unfortunately, an incident in turn five left him nowhere to go and he suffered a nasty crash in which he ran over another rider, separating him from his motorcycle. He was able to avoid injury and ride his bike back to the pits after the race was immediately red flagged. The team worked in frenzied fashion to repair the damaged parts of the motorcycle and he was able to rejoin the grid for the restart in which he put himself at the front of the Superstock 1000 class on the opening lap. Scholtz maintained a relatively lonely fifth position overall for the majority of the race, simultaneously securing the Superstock 1000 victory as he overtook first place in the points standings headed to Utah Motorsports Campus.
