There was a fierce battle for the lead between the top five riders, hurriedly chopping and changing positions for the first half of the race. Beaubier was struggling with his brakes fading throughout the early stages, forcing him to run Toni Elias wide in turn twelve as the pack came around to start the third lap. He attempted to tuck in behind the Yamaha pair of Josh Herrin and Josh Hayes at the front of the field, but the Yoshimura Suzuki of Roger Hayden had other ideas. The two of them were involved in a fierce battle for third position with action that resembled a Moto3 race taking place on track. As the final stages of the race approached, Beaubier began to show his hand as he turned up the aggression meter to an eleven and forced his way to the front of the field past his teammate.
