Dumas took some time to come to grips with the way things are done in MotoAmerica as the Canadian set the fifteenth fastest time in the opening practice session. He greatly improved from that in qualifying as he jumped halfway up the field, all the way to eighth position. The Canadian sat in the middle of the third row on the grid, approximately two seconds off of the pole position lap time. Dumas proved himself as a spirited racer immediately after the lights went out in race one as he made up a handful of positions on the first lap. He had worked his way into third position by the time the pack had circulated the track for
a second time. Dumas forced his way past Beauchamp and took a couple of laps to follow Smith as he began to plot his attack. The fourteen year old was briefly able to force his way into the lead past Smith, but it was short-lived as the Pennsylvanian struck right back, forcing him to settle for third position. The second race was almost exactly the same as the first as Dumas fought his way forward in the early stages of the race and he was able to set his sights on the lead by the third lap. The Canadian took his chance at leading from laps seven to eight, but it was to no avail as Beauchamp and Smith came rolling through, forcing Dumas back to third at the end of the battle.
