Tyler Wissel was another rider that continually improved throughout the opening weekend of the 2017 RC Cup as he went from a seventh overall in practice to a third in qualifying. The Ohio native was able to take advantage of exceptional drafting technique in order to clock a 1:49.313, placing him directly in contention for the victory on the front row of the grid. Wissel’s stockier frame is an advantage in the realm of high school wrestling, but managing to overcome that disadvantage
in the RC390 Cup maybe a larger feat than expected. The Ohioan was able to maintain his position in the opening race, holding onto third position until he was overtaken by the #690 of Alex Dumas. Wissel dropped back towards fifth position as the top three began to separate themselves from the field, placing him in contention with Trevor Standish and Gavin Anthony for fourth position. The three of them duked it out all the way until the checkered flag with Wissel holding the advantage until the penultimate lap, but he was overtaken by Standish on the final lap and he was demoted back to fifth position at the race’s end. In the second race, Wissel was determined to stick with the leading group and he did exactly that for the entirety of the race. The Ohioan sat firmly in third place until half-race distance, eventually forfeiting a spot to Draik Beauchamp that pushed him off the podium. Wissel was able to fight tooth and nail to regain third position with only a handful of laps to go. He found himself in a heated battle with Dumas for the final podium position in an attempt to finish on the
box for the first time in his RC390 career -- he wrestled his way past Dumas at the final opportunity, securing third place on the podium in order to cap off a successful opening weekend the 2017 series.
